Belt colour

Green belt signifies a plant’s growth as the skills in Taekwon-Do begin to develop.

Kicks

  • Front snap kick - Ap cha busigi

Striking tool: Ball of the foot - Ap kumchi​

  • Side piercing kick - Yop cha jirugi

Striking tool: Footsword - Balkal

  • Turning kick - Dollyo chagi

Striking tool: Ball of the foot - Ap kumchi​

  • Reverse turning kick - Bandae dollyo chagi

Striking tool: Back heel - Dwit chook

  • Back piercing kick - Dwit cha jirugi

Striking tool: Footsword - Balkal

  • Downward kick - Naero chagi

Striking tool: Back heel - Dwit chook

  • Instep - Baldung

Patterns

Dan Gun

Dan Gun is named after the holy Dan Gun legendary founder of Korea in the year 2333 BC.

​

The pattern has 21 movements, and when performed forms the shape of a capital I (⌶).

​

New movements introduced in the pattern:

  • Knifehand guarding block - Sonkal daebi makgi

  • Twin forearm block - Sang palmok makgi

  • Rising block - Chookyo makgi

  • Knifehand side strike - Sonkal yop taerigi

  • High section obverse punch - Nopunde baro jirugi

Hand techniques

  • Knifehand strike - Sonkal taerigi

  • Reverse knifehand strike - Sonkal dung taerigi

  • Backfist - Dung joomuk

  • Reverse punch - Bandae jirugi

  • Elbow strike - Palkup taerigi

  • Straight fingertip thrust - Sun sonkut tulgi

Blocks

  • Rising block - Chookyo makgi

  • Forearm guarding block - Palmok daebi makgi

  • Knifehand guarding block - Sonkal daebi makgi

  • Twin forearm block - Sang palmok makgi

  • Inward outer forearm - Anaero bakat palmok makgi

  • Downward block - Naeryo makgi

Directions

  • Inwards - Anaero

  • Outwards - Bakaero

Parts of the hand & foot

  • Forefirst - Ap joomuk

3-step sparring - Sambo matsogi

  • Attacker steps back into a right walking stance, and executes a low section outer forearm block.​

  • Attacker kihaps (shout) and waits for defender to kihap.

  • Attacker then executes a walking stance middle section obverse punch three times while moving forwards.

  • Defender stands in parallel ready stance, then executes three blocks against the attacker's techniques while moving backwards.

  • Immediately after the third block, defender executes a single counter-attack.​

Grading syllabus

The following techniques form part of your grading requirements, and the examiner may ask you to demonstrate some of all of these, as well as anything from previous gradings:

  • Pattern Dan Gun.

  • Three step sparring. Sambo matsogi.

  • Walking stance, front snap kick, obverse/reverse punch. Gunnun so, ap cha busigi, baro, bandae jirugi.

  • Low section outer forearm block, rising block. Najunde bakat palmok makgi, chookyo makgi.

At this stage, you should be able to perform the following three basic kicks correctly:

  • Font snap kick. Ap cha busigi.

  • Side piercing kick. Yop cha jirugi.

  • Turning kick. Dollyo chagi.

Make sure your kicks start from the correct place, and that the shape of the kick is correct. Make sure that the proper part of the foot is utilised and that the kick is aimed at the proper target area of the body. Finally, always maintain your balance and posture during the kick, and make sure the kick recovers correctly.
