Both participants start in parallel ready stance facing each other.

The attacker performs one offensive technique against the defender.

Defender either executes one defence and then counters, or simultaneously defends and counters e.g. against a middle punch: knifehand outward block to the attacking tool and simultaneous inward knifehand strike to the neck.

This is done with both a right and left hand attack so students ensure they can defend and counter with both hands.

Once both sides are completed, attacker and defender swap roles.
Patterns
Yul Gok
Yul Gok is the pseudonym of the great philosopher and scholar Yi I (1536 – 1584), nicknamed the 'Confucius of Korea'.
The 38 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on the line of 38 degrees latitude, and the diagram represents "scholar" (士).
